Synthroid (Levothyroxine)
General information
Synthroid is a medicine prescribed for treating of primary, secondary, tertiary hypothyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism, and obesity. The medicine contains levothyroxine sodium, a substance identical to the thyroid gland hormone. It can be used in co-administration with diet pills.
Directions
It is recommended to take the medicine as it was prescribed by your doctor. Take it with a big glass of water. Usually recommended dose is 30-60 minutes before breakfast. Do not exceed your dose.
Precautions
Be careful using the medicine if you have cardiovascular disease, concomitant adrenal insufficiency.
Contraindications
Patients with Synthroid acute myocardial infarction, untreated subclinical or overt thyrotoxicosis, and uncorrected adrenal insufficiency can't take the medicine.
Possible side effect
Side effects can be the following: headache, insomnia, nervous or irritable feeling, hyperactivity, anxiety, emotional lability, fever, tachycardia, arrhythmias, hot flashes, sweating, changes in your menstrual periods, appetite changes, diarrhea, vomiting, weight changes, hair loss, flushing.
Drug interaction
The medicine can interact with the following medicines: calcium carbonate (Oystercal, Caltrate, Citracal), sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Kayexalate, Kionex), ferrous sulfate iron supplement, sucralfate (Carafate), antacids that contain aluminum (Rulox, Tums, Maalox, Mylanta, Riopan, Amphojel, Gaviscon), cholesterol-lowering drugs colestipol (Colestid) and cholestyramine (Questran), warfarin, digoxin, estrogen products, diabetes medicines, amiodarone, iodide, lithium, anti-thyroid agents, phenobarbital, rifamycins, beta blockers, antidepressants and growth hormones.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time of the next intake just skip it and go back to your schedule.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are pounding heartbeat, chest pain, tremor, leg cramps, confusion and disorientation, shortness of breath, vomiting, diarrhea, or seizures.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 F (15-25 C) away from light and moisture, kids and pets. Do not use after expiration term.
